History: House Anna Matt – 300 Years of  history

Steibis was burned down by the Swedes around 1640. The house, built using traditional knitted construction, was likely erected around 1700 as a farmhouse with a barn and hayloft. Water supply was provided by a ram pump, though it was insufficient to adequately supply the needs of 6-8 livestock and the household.

In 1932, the house, along with its fields and forest, was sold in parts. The new owner was gamekeeper Burger, from whom the stag antlers in the house’s gable originate. In 1934, master carpenter Peter Matt acquired the building along with a small parcel of land. He immediately tore down the barn and hayloft, replacing them with a carpenter’s workshop and wood storage in their current form. His wife, Anna Matt, converted the house to accommodate 8-10 guests, enabled by the community’s high-pressure water supply. The "Guesthouse Peter Matt," along with the carpentry business, ski production and sales, and an apiary housing up to 10 bee colonies, provided a solid livelihood.

In 1959, their daughter Anna Matt took over the house, continuing the guest accommodations and caring for her parents. The current name, "Guesthouse Anna Matt," originated during this period. Peter Matt lived to the age of 89, Anna Matt to 98, and their daughter Anna Matt to 73. After her passing in 2000, the guest rooms were renovated by the current owner, Josef Matt, and equipped with private bathrooms, maintaining their characteristic charm.

Between 2000 and 2004, the house was managed by the Biebricher family and later by Ms. Nissen.

In May 2004, the bee house was lost to a fire. Thanks to the efforts of the local fire department and the attentive citizens of Steibis, greater damage was prevented. Since July 2004, we have proudly cared for the house and its guests.
